JOHNSTOUNBURN, MIDLOTHIAN, SCOTLAND. This estate was purchased by Andrew Usher in the 1884. He entertained shooting parties there until his death in 1898 and sometimes lived there, although it was not his main abode. The present mansion house had its start as an inn in 1625. At that time it was known as the "Highwayman's Haunt" as it was frequented by these "gentlemen of the road" before robbing the London to Edinburgh stage-coaches which passed about a mile away. The Borthwick family were the earliest to live at Johnstounburn. In the late 1700's the Broun family purchased and enlarged the house and built extensively on other parts of the estate. Andrew Usher left this estate to his daughter Mary Murray Usher. It then went to a grand-daughter of Andrew Usher, Mrs Elworthy. When she died her son sold it and it became an hotel. It was until quite recently part of the Thistle group of hotels. In March 2000 it was sold as a home again.

HALLRULE HOUSE, ROXBURGHSHIRE, SCOTLAND. The main part of this mansion house was built in the early 1800's by a Mr John Wilson. Sir Robert Usher purchased the Hallrule estate, which bordered Wells estate, and merged into the larger Wells estate in 1901. Sir Robert then made extensive additions to the house on its eastern aspect as can be readily seen in the illustration of Hallrule House. He also added an extensive service flat to the attic floor. This house was designated to be the dower house of Wells estate. It became the home of Sir Stuart Usher and his family in 1950 until it was sold in 1995 along with the rest of the Wells estate due to the incapacity of his sons to make Wills. The house was surrounded by policies of about 50 acres.
